About KS Custom Business Services
Twenty years in the field.
Built for what comes next.
KS Custom Business Services was built inside the trades, by someone who learned the work before she ran the books. The story below is how that became a financial operations firm, and why it’s the right one for businesses that need their numbers to keep up with the work.
The Origin Story
It started in the trades.
It still lives there.
KS Custom Business Services started in the trades — HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing — and that’s still where our deepest expertise lives. The same rigor we bring to a field-service operation translates to any small business that needs a dedicated financial team, direct access to the people doing the work, and books they can actually trust.
Kimberley Simmons didn’t come up through public accounting. She came up inside the back offices of field-service companies — companies where the workday started before sunrise, where job tickets piled up faster than anyone could file them, and where the difference between a profitable quarter and a survival quarter came down to whether the books told the truth.
That’s where she learned what most bookkeepers learn from a textbook, except she learned it the way contractors learn anything — by doing it, breaking it, and figuring out how to do it right the next time. Job costing for an HVAC install isn’t an academic exercise when you’ve watched a company lose money on every other job because nobody knew which department was bleeding. Departmentalized P&Ls aren’t a feature on a software brochure when you’re the one rebuilding a chart of accounts at 9 PM because the owner needs to know by Monday whether to hire another tech.
Twenty years of that. Across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, appliance repair, tree services, paving — the trades that don’t get written about in business books but keep the country running. The software contractors actually use: Aptora Total Office Manager, QuickBooks Desktop, QuickBooks Online. Not the software vendors prefer to sell. The software contractors run their businesses on.
KSCBS came out of that work. It started because contractors kept asking Kimberley if she could just do their books, too — and because she’d seen enough remote arrangements done badly to know what doing it right would look like. Direct access. Books that match how the business actually runs, not how the software wants them to look.
The trades are where the firm started and where its deepest fluency lives. But the discipline that field-service work demands — clean job costing, real-time clarity, financials that drive decisions instead of describing them — that translates. To horse farms running payroll for seasonal labor. To distributors tracking inventory across regions. To app companies trying to figure out what an annual budget should even look like. To any owner-operated business that needs a financial team, not a generalist with a login.

The Team
A small team.
You know who's on your books.
No outsourcing platform, no call center routing, no rotating account managers. When you work with KSCBS, you know the three people who handle your financials. You can reach them. They know your business.

How We Work
Four principles.
Every client, every month.
- 01
Deepest Expertise
We started in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and roofing, and that's still where our deepest expertise lives. Job costing, departmentalized accounting, Aptora, QuickBooks. We speak the language. The same rigor translates to any small business that needs books they can trust.
- 02
Direct Access
You work with Kimberley and a small, dedicated team, not a call center, not an outsourcing platform. When you need answers, you get them from someone who knows your books.
- 03
Remote Done Right
Remote doesn't mean disconnected. Our systems, communication, and responsiveness make geography a non-issue. Available wherever you operate.
- 04
Clarity Over Complexity
Financial information should make decisions easier, not harder. Monthly reconciliations, close-outs, and reporting that actually tells you something — not a stack of statements you have to interpret yourself.
